Sažetak
The extensive use of anionic surfactants (ASs) results in their presence in industrial effluents causing environmental problems. Therefore their monitoring in effluents and surface waters is of great importance. The standard method for ASs determination in industrial effluents and surface waters is MBAS method (Methylene Blue Active Substances method). The ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) selective to ASs, used as sensors in direct potentiometry and potentiometric titrations represent a great alternative to MBAS method. A new simple, sensitive, accurate and inexpensive potentiometric sensor for the determination of ASs based on the dimethyldioctadecylammonium-tetraphenylborate (DDA-TPB) ion pair as a sensing material was used for the end-point detection during the potentiometric titrations of low levels of ASs in industrial effluents. The solutions (down to 5•10^-5 M) of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) were successfully used as a titrant. The accuracy and precision of the measurements was checked using standard addition method and provided satisfactory results with recoveries between 98.3 to 102.0 % in pure AS solutions and 99.0 to 114.5 % in effluents. ASs concentration in effluents ranged between 2.64 and 176.7 mg/L. The results were compared with standard spectrophotometric MBAS method indicating a satisfactory mutual agreement. The influence of the different pH values (2-10) and ionic strengths (0.003-0.301) on the shape of potentiometric titration curves and response characteristics of the sensor were examined.
