It is often stated that the total amount of information and knowledge that has been accumulated in this century is greater than everything accumulated before. Libraries have been established as timeless keepers of mankind’s knowledge. Today, they have to redefine their role. In order to do that, the properties, rules, problems and requirements of the emerging world need to be examined and determined. Information Society The sintagma “Information Society” most suitably describes this emerging world in which all information is digital, immaterial, in which information is never lost and almost indestructible. Every individual is interconnected with every other individual as well as with all devices, machines and systems that make the difference. An individual is completely free to directly receive or send any information from or to any source or destination. The correspondent can be an individual or a freely and dynamically formed community of individuals sharing common interest and who are totally independent of physical or temporal limits. Communicating is fast, prompt, up-to-date, simple, easy and cheap. It is available and affordable to just anybody. Thus we no longer need libraries to keep physical embodiments and evidences of knowledge or experience, nor we need publishers to disseminate what we have to say. The information exchanged need not be only in written form. It can be sounds, still and moving pictures, signals of any kind, commands and control programs. Neither information exchanged nor communication channels and processes can be controlled, checked or verified. The truth no longer can be stopped from reaching the audience. Neither can a lie. Help needed As easy as it is to send the information, it is easy to send misinformation, too. As easy as it is to process it, it is easy to spoil or damage it. In Information Society it is essential to find reliable sources of information and to know referral sites that can be trusted. With ever-changing technology, products and services, the key help required is in consulting, education and support in the field of information technology and information services. Although no intermediator is required in order to send information, advises and directions on how and where to promote own information, knowledge, product or service are necessary, if they are to reach the right user. Technology now enables everyone to store huge amount of information forever. However, safety of information always has a price: in money, time, knowledge and other resources. Economy of scale makes it much cheaper to safeguard it in specialized places for a specific community. Communities do need a kind of “central memory”, a place which role is to keep archives of common data, information, knowledge and experience. Although IT is relatively cheap, there are still decades ahead till everybody will have access to the Net from home and workplace. In the same time, access to cyberworld will be needed everywhere: in school, at work, close to home. The role of a library In Information Society everybody is entitled with access to cyberworld. Even the poorest, youngest, oldest, foreigners and travelers. If there is no other way, library should and could be the place of last resort, when access to the Net is considered. In hunting and fishing for the right information trust and relevance is crucial. For that purpose, at least one trusted referral point is required. The easiest and most logical point is local (closest) library. The library has to be that trusted point. This is also place where one should get help, advise, education and coaching. This is equally important for finding information, as for publicizing own, for identifying appropriate tools, as for using them efficiently and properly. Library always needs to know as much about the community it serves, as possible. This is very important in order to be able to point in directions where required information should be sought but also to be able to identify and recognize the wealth produced in local community that needs to be saved. It is the role of the library to detect, acquire, process and store the information, knowledge, skill, experience, product and service of the community it serves. Network of libraries Library as isolated island of intellectual wealth no longer exists. Library today is as good as it is up-to-the-date with world-wide development and events. It also serves its community only as much as its stored wealth is transparent to every other community. Therefore, nobody needs a stand-alone library but rather a node in the network of libraries. Simultaneously, the amount of work that needs to be performed in a library is tremendous. Identifying and verifying new sources, processing information, publicizing, acquiring tools requires significant resources: many hours of intense work of highly qualified professionals. Only few libraries in the world could possible engage and afford sufficient resources. The only solution for others is distributed and cooperative work: what is done once, need not be repeated elsewhere. The answer is: the network of libraries. Network not only in the sense of technology and communications, but also organization of work, flow of information, mutual coeducation, exchange of professionals. Only network can answer every question an user can ask. Only network can trace information to its source and verify it. Only network can display news to a significant number of recipients. Only network can assure fast and accurate coverage of changes, in any area. Further steps First, the new role(s) of a library need to be defined. The best way to achieve that is through definition of services to its users. Determination and definition of standards would help communication and exchange (of anything) among libraries. The understanding that no boundaries or constraints in building network(s) of libraries can exist, is absolutely necessary. Exchange of information, knowledge, experience and experts is the key to building and running the network. Cooperation is the keyword. If a single most important activity has to be pointed to, it would be continuous and intensive education of all professionals working in libraries. Conclusions An individual has much greater impact on events in Information Society than ever before. She or he does it by intensive acquisition and dissemination of information in the most direct way. However, in order to do this as efficient as possible, individuals need intense help. This is the most natural task for libraries and they must find the way for rapid transformation in order to take that role. And, they have to, and only can, do it jointly, as a network.
