Sažetak
Orthopedic disorders, although rarely fatal, severely reduce quality of life and impose huge socioeconomic burden on modern society. This is particularly true for professional and recreational athletes, since their carriers and lifestyles heavily depend on a properly functioning musculoskeletal system. The treatments of sports injuries have been dramatically improved during the past few decades. Through the development of sophisticated diagnostic tools, novel operative techniques, and surgical implants and advances in basic and translational research, the duration of treatment and return to the training process have been substantially shortened. Despite this considerable progress, no optimal solution has been found for treatment of various sportsrelated injuries, including ligament and tendon ruptures, meniscal tears, articular cartilage defects, muscle injuries, and stress fractures. The need for novel and innovative strategies has turned the focus of the clinicians towards new biological approaches and the use of growth factors to stimulate intrinsic healing capacities of injured tissues. As these bioactive molecules are difficult to administer effectively, gene therapy strategies have emerged as an attractive option for sustained release of the agents at the site of repair. This chapter will provide insight into the field of growth factors and gene therapy in treatment of sports injuries and its potential for safe and effective clinical translation.
