Sažetak
Introduction Metabolic syndrome (MS) is defined as a set of risk factor s for occurrence of diabetes mellitus type II and cardiovascular disease. Aim The aim of this study was to asses the prevalence of abdomi nal obesity and associated MS risk factors in adolescents. Subjects and methods Data was obtained from cross-sectional study „Cardiovascular risk factors in school children and youth-intervention model development“ con ducted on representative sample of school children in Croatia. The data of 2341 children (47, 8% girls) aged 16.00-18.99 years were analysed by descriptive statistics. D iagnostic criteria for MS in adolescents (older than 16 years) was defined according t o International Diabetes Federation (IDF): WC ≥ 94 cm for male and ≥ 80 cm for female, and elevated blood pressure (BP) as systolic and/or diastolic BP ≥130 and/or ≥ 85 mmHg. Overweight and obesity was considered according International Obesity Task Force criteria (IOTF). Results Abdominal obesity as a major component of MS was presen t in 7.2% of boys and 13.8% of girls in a sample. Overweight or obesity was present i n 100% boys and 55% of girls with abdominal obesity. Abdominal obesity and elevated BP was present in 5.4% of boys and 4.1% of girls. Abdominal obesity, elevated BP a nd overweight or obesity was present in 5.6% of boys and 3.8% of girls. Conclusions Presented results showed presence of MS components in ado lescents that suggest follow-up and application of measures for life-style cha nges. Program of specific measures of health care for school children in Croatia in cludes anthropometric measurements, such as body weight, height and BP that ar e routinely carried as a part of systematic examination. WC measurement and performan ce of relevant laboratory tests would enable better screening of children and ado lescents at risk for MS.
