Sažetak
This presentation will begin with a reminder of the WHO infant feeding recommendations, followed by a brief overview of the properties of human milk. It will then look at how breastfeeding protects newborns and infants from acute and chronic diseases, provides an invaluable food source and enables emotional attachment between the mother and baby. This will lead on to the issue of access to human milk through ‘milk banks’. In many countries, donor milk banking has been incorporated into child health policy and is protected, promoted and supported as an extension of national breastfeeding policies. In Croatia there are currently no milk banks. Participants will be given an overview of the advantages and costs involved with establishing human milk banks and the current situation in Europe. This will be followed by a look at the vital role of early skin-to-skin contact between mothers and their children, including how it regulates basic physiology, provides positive and stimulating sensations to the baby, organises state and optimises bonding. Finally, the audience will be informed of new initiatives to improve standards in neonatal units including expanding the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative ‘Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding’ into neonatal intensive care and introducing International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) into the neonatal setting.
