Sažetak
Watermelon is among the most important crops in the coastal part of Croatia. Due to limitation in arable land, the watermelon is planted successively at the same plot for years. Under those conditions problems caused by sili-borne diseases and pests, and increased soil salinity, have become serous constrain in vegetable production. Grafting is technique frequently used to overcome diverse limitations in vegetable production. We have tested effect of three rootstocks [‘Strong Tosa’ and ‘S1’ (Cucurbita maxima x Cucurbita moschata), or ‘Emphasis’ (Lagenaria siceraria)] on fruit size and quality of watermelon (cv. Fantasy) exposed to a NaCl-induced salinity stress (EC = 2.2, 4.0, or 6.0 dS/m). The fruit length, diameter, circumference, and weight were linearly decreased as salinity increased but the effect of rootstocks was observed only for fruit circumference and weight. The lycopene content of the fruit was increased as salinity increased, while differences among rootstocks were not significant. The content of glucose and fructose were higher at 6 dS/m compared to 2 dS/m, and opposite was observed for sucrose content. Rootstock effect was significant only for fruit sucrose content, and it was higher in ungrafted compared to those grafted on 'S1' and 'Strong Tosa'.
