Sažetak
The use of environmentally friendly solvents for the production of industrially important chemicals is a subject of numerous scientific studies in the field of chemical technology and biotechnology. Therefore, ionic liquids and eutectic solvents, a new generation of non- volatile and stable solvents, have been recently intensively studied as a replacement for traditional solvents in organic synthesis and (bio)catalysis. On the other hand, biocatalytic production of short chain esters, which are particularly important as flavours in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry, have been dramatically expanding in popularity as a promising alternative to chemical synthesis of flavour esters from an economic and environmental point of view. Therefore, in order to develop environmentally friendly process for the synthesis of short chain esters, we investigated the possibility of conducting the lipase-catalyzed butyl acetate synthesis in environmentally acceptable solvents: cholinium-based ionic liquid choline maleate and cholinium-based eutectic solvent choline chloride:glycerol (molar ration 1:2). To compare the success of the esterification with that in conventional organic solvents and ionic liquids, ester synthesis was also carried out in n-heptane and imidazolium ionic liquid (1-pentyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. Our results show that cholinium-based deep eutectic solvents are promising alternatives for organic solvents in lipase-catalyzed reactions.
