Sažetak
Remediation of the City of Zagreb Jakuševec Dump Site, one of the largest dump sites in Europe, is in progress. First model of constructed wetland has been built in Croatia for determining the purification ability of leachate from the first section of the Jakuševec Dump Site, as well as their polishing in the polishing pond.
The objective of this study was to verify the treatment efficiency of hydro-macrophytes potted in small experimental tanks to simulate and extrapolate results into a polishing pond system. The polishing pond at Jakuševec landfill site works in Croatia is to assess the efficiency of hydro-macrophytes to treat effluent from pilot constructed wetland and optimise designs of effective treatment. The paper discusses the treatment efficiency and removal processes of nutrients from microcosms.
Laboratory experimental results of the purification of leachate using aquatic macrophytes show that increasing the concentration of ammonia in leachate, decreases the efficiency of its elimination. In all series of experiments, significantly greater elimination of ammonia and orthophosphates has been obtained in the planted microcosms, than in the unplanted microcosms. For treatment of wastewater in the polishing pond following species may be recommended: Phragmites australis, Myriophyllum verticilatum, Ceratophyllum demersum, Lemna minor and Salvinia natans.
