Sažetak
The aim of the study was to evaluate antibiotic prescription in surgical ICUs in Croatia. The study was set up in seven surgical ICUs throughout Croatia. It included 468 patients, hospitalised since 1st November 1998 until 31st January 1999. Antimicrobial agents were prescribed for prophylactic measures in 337 (72%) patients. There were 400 prescriptions. They repreesented 19.1 62.0% of total antimicrobial prescriptions. There was wide institutional diversity in the choice of antimicrobial agents. The most frequently used therapeutics were: cefazolin (25%), metronidazol (14.5%), Cefuroxim (13.8%), gentamycin (12.0%) and amoxicilin with clavulanic acid (10.3%). Combination of antimicrobial drugs was used for prophylaxis in up to 76.5% of cases. There was also diversity in the duration of prophylaxis ; minimum 1, maximum 16 days, median values 2-5 das. There is no common approach to prophylacitic usage of antimicrobial agents. It is necessary to develop and apply guidelines to achive better prophylaxis and avoid prolonged postoperative antibiotic use.
