Sažetak
The Collected Papers: ‘Economics in Awkward Corner’ is Guru’s attempt to make a comprehensive study of all the literature concerning the subjects with which he’s been confronted with for the last 12 years, since he joined Pula. As most people outside let alone inside the field view economics as dry, theoretical, abstract and highly technical, professor Sharma alerts the reader that the best way to study economics is to get back to its roots, namely the understanding of philosophical perspectives, economic cores that stand behind economic science and universal ground that is to be identical within all schools of thought as unchanged in their ever-changing forms. The volume presents Sharma’s view on the logical, epistemological, sociological and educational features of some economic subjects. In this volume, Sharma, much as a polymath, is rather selectively penetrating in particular lines of economic structures ranging from epistemological perception, philosophical and sociological affiliations, key ideas in micro and macro-economics. In our view, this selectiveness is formed in formal positivist manner, because Sharma elusively picks topics that have sufficiently strong scientific foundation, all which is noticeable in Parts 3, 4 and 5. Not withdrawing from his assumption that true scholar has to have judgment whatsoever, Guru dramatically relates experience, anecdotes and facts of cognitive v science that is economics in Parts 1 and 2. Every section is composed of carefully selected articles and texts that emphasize the above stated. Although some texts address issues that were debated years ago, the structure presented by Sharma is universally conclusive and can be applied to every historical period. What professor Sharma presents here can be applied at all times and places. To him, economics is both quantitative and qualitative discipline, and every section of the book responsibly nourishes this view. The selection of topics is designed to strike a balance between these two objectives. Being fluent in both English and Croatian Sharma behaves like a true pedagogue, so this book is a bilingual work which by all means presents an adequate safeguard against the danger of extrapolating wrong conclusions from translated texts. All papers and text are already reviewed in their original sources, however both of us together with the author found it necessary to additionally edit some of the titles and texts in order to make them more representative in their logical continuation. At the start of each text, the original publications are specified. The book is consisted of 5 Parts, each is packed with chapters that are vividly presented and rigorously interpreted. Not to annihilate the joy of reading, we will shortly describe the main contents of each section of the book. The real thrill of apprehension will be left to the reader to achieve. However, we must guard the readers that the text will be rather hard to read for those who do not have formal training in economics and philosophy and are not familiar with the basic economic principles, theories and the authors. Bibliographic notes are provided at the ends of chapters to help readers who want to pursue topics in greater depth.
