Sažetak
Throughout the centuries, different breeds of domestic animals have been bred in Croatia, such as cattle, pigs, horses, sheep, goats and poultry. This paper analyzes financial supports provided for breeding of particular species, presenting also their specific productive and economical characteristics and population. The program of financial supports is determined by the Regulations within the Program of preserving indigenous and protected breeds (Official Journal no. 03/07). Beneficiaries of financial supports may be farms that have been recorded in the Registry of agricultural farms in Croatia, and the Program is implemented within the rural development framework, with the aim to promote sustainable development of rural areas by creating working and living conditions for the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. In 2004, an amount of 459 646.35 EUR was paid for supports, and in 2010 that amount increased for ten times, being 4 840 869.92 EUR provided for breeding of indigenous and protected breeds of domestic animals. According to population size, there were the most sheep (22 631), then horses (10 461), followed by 1713 cattle, 1003 pigs, 3087 poultry and 485 goats. Therefore, support program included grants for breeding of 39 380 animals, kept on 2 834 agricultural farms. Analysis of financial supports according to breeds indicated the following relative shares: horses 54.96%, sheep 22.43%, cattle 18.83%, pigs 2.12%, poultry 1.17% and goats 0.49%. Supports provided within an individual breed are significant for Coldblood Croatian horse and Croatian Posavac horse, Istrian cattle, Black Slavonian pig, Dalmatian Pramenka, Lika Pramenka, Croatia colorful goat and Zagorje turkey. All breeds represent genetic resources and strategic reserves for future development of new genotypes of domestic animals.
