Sažetak
Purpose: To investigate whether variability of the body mass index (BMI), social comparison, body dissatisfaction, and other’s perception of one's body contribute to different kinds of weight control behaviours like physical activity, moderate dieting, and other extreme dieting methods (ex. vomiting, laxative abuse). Another purpose was to test whether adolescent females differ in body dissatisfaction, dieting, addiction to physical activity and, perception of one’s body, according to their BMI. Methods: The data were collected from a sample of 292 females at fourth grade of high school (aged from 17.16 to 19.42). For testing the change in BMI, height and weight from 5th and 8th grade of elementary school and 4th grade of high school were used. Figure rating scale, Physical Appearance Comparison Scale, Bulimia Investigatory Test, Adolescent Dieting Scale and The Exercise Addiction Inventory were also used. Results: There is a difference in body dissatisfaction and dieting between different groups of girls according to their BMI. Adolescents with BMI around the group average are less unsatisfied with their bodies and achieve lower results on dieting test in comparison with girls that have BMI higher than is group average. The first diet more frequently in comparison to the girls that have BMI lower than average. Discussion: Body dissatisfaction and upward social comparison are the main predictors of dieting in female students. It would be very important for prevention to emphasize factors related to body dissatisfaction such as BMI, parents and pear pressure, and social comparison because of their relation to dieting and use of extreme weight control behaviours.
