Sažetak
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) impact on productivity, health and welfare of sheep grazing systems throughout the world. The control of GIN is being complicated by the increasing, widespread and rapid development of anthelmintic resistance to all major families of broad-spectrum anthelmintics. Moreover, chemically based GIN control strategies are not sustainable. In recent years, efficacy of many GIN management strategies and approaches has been evaluated. Possible anthelmintic (AH) properties of various plants, as a part of sustainable control strategies against GIN of sheep, was evaluated. The use of plants with anthelmintic properties (herbal dewormers), either as phytotherapeutic or nutraceutical options, seems to be an effective alternative, both from the standpoint of parasite control and their low environmental impact from residues in relation to commercial anthelmintics. This review summarizes available results of scientific validations of AH effectiveness of various plants in sheep based on plant species, test method and evaluation conditions. Reported results of studies are contrasting. It is difficult to draw general conclusions or recommendations of plant bioactive compounds as anthelmintics in control strategies against GI nematodoses of sheep.
