Sažetak
The topic of this final thesis deals with Ferdinand de Saussure and his idea of meaning in the linguistic sign. However, the aim of this work is to explain not only De Saussure’s linguistic sign, but also to explain meaning in general, to say something about semiotics, ways of communicating and difficulties encountered between interlocutors, as it might help in getting a clearer image of De Saussure’s ideas. Furthermore, after contrasting his model of the sign to that of Ogden and Richards, it became easier to notice the advantages and disadvantages of these two models. Besides this, the two most important principles of De Saussure’s linguistic sign, the principle of arbitrariness, and the linearity of the signal, are explained, and a lot of attention has been devoted to his notion of value since it is where De Saussure’s structuralist approach is most obvious. All in all, it is evident why he was considered ahead of his time and his ideas make one wonder how come most people never even notice or question the connection between names and objects around us.
