Sažetak
Vitamins are low molecular weight organic substances that are essential nutrients for normal growth, maintenance of good health, reproduction and various metabolic functions in poultry production. They are classified as fat-soluble and water-soluble and both are equally important for animal health and wellbeing. Vitamin deficiency can have various adverse effects on animal health since the diet composition is considered to be in direct correlation with the immune system of poultry. For example, symptoms of vitamin deficiency include: weakness and impaired growth, bowed legs, loss of appetite, dermatitis and lesions of mouth and feet, inflammation of tongue and mouth cavity, prolonged blood clothing, intramuscular bleeding, reduced egg production, thin egg shell, as well as fatty liver and anemia. According to available research reports, lack of some dietary vitamins can increase the ratio of facultative pathogenic bacteria and decrease the diversity of bacteria in the ceca of broilers. It has been shown that supplementing the diets with certain vitamins can improve defence of organism against some pathogens. This paper will include an overview of vitamins that are important for poultry health, illnesses that are caused by their deficiency as well as available research data about correlations of some vitamins and poultry health problems.
