Sažetak
Aim. To determine Osijek-Baranja women's knowledge about osteoporosis and their attitudes towards its prevention and treatment. Materials and methods. During June 2005, adjusted, anonymous questionnaire developed by the Family Practice department of the Middle East Technical University Medical Centre (Ankara, Turkey) was administrated to a 2 600 randomly selected women aged 25-75 years, living in the Osijek-Baranya County. A total of 2 338 women who completed the entire questionnaire were included in the study. Results. According to the questionnaire 9.4% (219/2338) study subjects already have had diagnosed osteoporosis. Among those, 63.5% (139/219) study subjects have taken some medications that can cause osteoporosis. Among study subjects 456 out of 2338 (19.5%) have controlled their bone status at least once during their lifetime. Study subjects have shown strong positive attitudes towards osteoporosis treatment (99.6% or 2328/2338 thought that osteoporosis needs to be treated) although their knowledge concerning some aspects of the osteoporosis prevention, especially risk factors, wasn't adequate. Following this, 67% (1566/2338) study subjects didn't know that the small body frame may be a risk factor for osteoporosis and 57.2% (1360/2338) of them wasn't aware that coffee consumption is also one of the risk factors. Conclusion. According to our survey, a considerable number of the Slavonian women are still not familiar with some basic facts concerning osteoporosis risk factors and its consequences. Therefore their knowledge of osteoporosis is inadequate and needs improvement by joining efforts of public health professionals involved in health promotion activities and family physicians in the field.
