Sažetak
Prelog's influence on Croatian science, particulary on chemistry and pharmacy in both academic and industrial sense, is immense. As the most important Prelog's impact, the literature accentuates the foundation of the Zagreb's School of Organic Chemistry during his seven-year-long activity at the University of Zagreb (1935th to 1941st) and the following acceptance of a great number of croatian PhD students and postdoctoral researhers into his laboratory at the Eidgenössiche Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zürich. Most of them achieved excellent scientific and academic careers upon thier return to Croatia. Among nearly 40 croatian scientists with whom Prelog collaborated, the one that stands out the most by the number of published scientific papers is his PhD student E. Cerkovnikov. Their collaboration was particularly intense and resulted in the publication of 18 scientific papers. E. Cerkovnikov's academic career started at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Zagreb, where he founded the Department of Organic Chemistry (1947th to 1957th). It continued at the Medical Faculty in Rijeka, where he founded the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, where he was the head until his retirement in 1975. The Department of Medical Sciences at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts preservs the correspondence between Prelog and Cerkovnikov. Subjects of the correspondence include Prelog being aworded honorary doctorates at the Faciulty of Pharmacy and the University of Zagreb, their scientific collaboration and the possibility of admission of Cerkovnikov's assosiates for specialization in Prelog’s laboratory at ETH. This review presents the details of their collaboration.
