Sažetak
This paper presents empirical investigation results regarding interested public perception of the communal waste disposal problem, as well as the establishment of the regional waste management centre in the Split-Dalmatia County, which is also the biggest county in Croatia. Republic of Croatia, by signing the Croatian European Union Accession Treaty, committed to fulfil the targets in the area of waste management. Croatia would secure the gradual decrease of waste stored at the existing unadjusted landfills. All the existing landfills in Croatia would have to meet the demands of the 2013 Directive by 31 December 2018. The qualitative research of the targeted sample was conducted using an in-depth interview and participant observance. The analysis of the empirical material used the theory-based method ; quantification of the qualitative processed coded material was calculated using the Statistica ver 11.00 computer package. The target of the research was to determine does the interested public consider that the current solutions of communal waste disposal and the suggested location of regional waste management centre were acceptable. The research determined the level of targeted and sector groups awareness regarding the waste management. Most examinees considered that the current waste disposal solution was not acceptable, and that the question of how to solve the problem of communal waste was not adequately answered. They did not support the suggested location of regional waste management centre. The analysis of the listed results showed that the representatives of the target and sector groups differed in the used variables, and that their attitude and opinion on the content questions depended on the group they belonged to.
