Sažetak
Strategic alliances represent a management tool that has had a prominent role in both academic and managerial world. As a hybrid organizational form, however, it is usually coupled with many difficulties in terms of defining some key concepts and designing research process. In this paper, we address some of the most important characteristics of strategic alliances and, at the same time, we give an overview of strategic alliances` characteristics undertaken in Croatia. After an in-depth literature review on evolution of cooperation between business rivals, the results of the empirical research undertaken in Croatia was given. Specifically, the cross-sectional analysis of strategic alliances characteristics revealed that alliances are usually formed between companies of comparable sizes ; that alliance experience does not necessarily imply more success in performance of future alliances ; and that, according to importance assigned to different motives, Croatian companies are aware of the fact that sustainable competitive advantage could be built on the network of relationships.
