Sažetak
Most of the observed cases of occupational transmission of hepatitis B and other blood-borne infections occurred in health care settings as the result of needlestick and sharp injuries (NSSIs). The aim of this study was to assess the occupational exposure of health care workers (HCWs) to NSSIs and compliance with the hepatitis B vaccination program at our hospital, using a self-report survey. The study included 119 nurses, 45 physicians, 18 medical technicians, and 28 housekeeping workers. During their working period, a majority of study participants (81%) experienced one or several NSSIs (12/13 practicing less than one year), but only 51% had completed vaccination against hepatitis B virus (HBV). In most cases, the injury occurred with hollow-bore needles, while recapping after use (33%) or while disconnecting (27%), more frequently amnog nurses (46% vs. 34%). To prevent occupational transmission of HBV and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), written guidelines for safe needle handling and other preventive measures at every working place are required. The infection control nurse (ICN) should control needle handling and disposal practices. Replacement of hazardous devices with those of a safer design is needed. The first HBV vaccination should be completed in HCWs before their first practice.
