Sažetak
Angiomyolipomas (AML) are benign, slow growing tumors composed of vascular cells, immature smooth-muscle-like-spindle-cells, epitheloid cells and fat cells. The most common affected organs are kidney and liver, often without symptoms. On ultrasound (US) imaging, AML tend to appear as homogenous, hypovascular, hyperechoic lesions with smooth contours. In three years period ( from 2006-2009) AML were diagnosed by US in 63 of 1250 patients (61% female and 49% male) in the Polyclinic Croatia zdravstveno osiguranje in Zagreb, Croatia. In 93% of patients AML were unilateral and in 89% of patients they measured less than 2 cm in diameter. Multiple AML were diagnosed in 3% of patients as a part of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). US has an important role as the first diagnostic method in assessment of AML with typical appearances. If atypical, especially when fat-poor, other lesion to consider include: renal cell carcinoma, oncocytoma and retroperitoneal liposarcoma invading the kidney. Computer Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging should be performed in selected cases.
