Sažetak
This chapter provides an overview of how memory politics in Croatia changed during the transition from communism and the establishment of an independent state in the 1990s. There is a focus on monuments, commemorations, and contested historical narratives related to the Second World War, as well as the debates about memorializing the Croatian War for Independence (Domovinski rat, 1991–1995). Whereas Croatia’s commemorative culture in the 1990s, specifically related to the memory sites of Jasenovac and Bleiburg, often exacerbated ethnic and ideological divisions in the country, recent efforts of President Ivo Josipović indicate a new approach to dealing with the past as Croatia looks towards the future as a member of the European Union.
