Sažetak
Reddy's (1979) discovery of the conduit metaphor (the main metaphor for communication) and Sweetser's (1990) work on analyzing this metaphor within the system of metaphors for knowledge (she showed that the conduit metaphor is a special case of a much more general and elaborate metaphor system – The Mind As Body system) led to the systematic analysis of the Metaphorical Mind by Lakoff (1999) within the framework of conceptual metaphor theory. Lakoff (1999) has shown that there is no mind or thought separate from and independent of the body and the brain. He has further shown that our understanding of mind is almost purely metaphorical. It is fashioned in terms of either a container image schema or physical acts with the general mapping: The Mind Is A Body ; Thinking Is Physical Functioning ; Ideas Are Entities (with special cases of physical functioning like moving, seeing, perceiving, manipulating objects, eating, speaking, writing, adding etc.). In this paper we will provide both synchronic and diachronic corpus-based analysis of metaphorical conceptions of Mind in the Old Croatian language and contemporary Croatian language. Both the container image schema for mind (where The Mind Is A Container – and thoughts fill that container as in vrag mu je grde misli u pamet postavil) and the container image schema for thought (where Thought Is A Container – and Self can enter that container as in zadubiti se u misli) will be analyzed in great detail, as will The Mind as Body metaphor system with all its sublevels. The research corpus consists primarily of the Croatian Language Repository (Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics), the Croatian National Corpus (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Zagreb) and the corpus for the Old Croatian Dictionary (not publicly available, Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics). In the synchronic perspective, the research will reveal to what extent and in which aspects the metaphorical conceptualization of Mind, as described by Lakoff (1999) and by Lakoff, Espenson, and Schwartz (1991) in the second edition of Master Metaphor List (description of Mental Events), works for and differs from the conceptions of Mind in the contemporary Croatian language. In the diachronic perspective, the research will elucidate the aspects in which the medieval concept of Mind differs from the modern one in the Croatian language.
