Sažetak
Evaluation of exterior and determination to a breed standard is an integral part of local and international exhibitions as well as confirmation of breeding values and breed purity. Standards for certain dog breeds usually cover only the most important body measurements and proportions of certain body parts of the adult dogs. It describes in detail some parts of the body and the body as a whole, as well as major and minor errors (deviations from the breed standard). However, individual measurements of the body, measures of the younger age categories and their body proportions are not covered. While evaluated at the exhibitions, dogs are registered and classified into different classes according to age and gender. In doing so, within the class appear deviations from the morphological characteristics included in the official breed standard. For getting detailed descriptions of autochthonous dog breeds, within the activities of the Department of Animal Husbandry at the Faculty of veterinary medicine in Zagreb was initiated a study entitled "Morphological and genetic characterization of Croatian autochthonous dog breeds". One of the first goals of the study is to determine which body measurements will be taken and the manner in which they are taken, so that the results are consistent and relevant. For a detailed insight into the growth and development of individuals it was determined to take measures of the head (head length, length and circumference of the nasal area, length and circumference of the skull, ear length and the distance between them), neck (length and circumference), trunk (height and width of the withers, body length, back length, height of the back/at sacrum, waist circumference, length and width of the croup, circumference, length and depth of chest), legs (height of elbow, knee and ankle) and tail length (scheme 1). Listed body measurements are taken by Lydtin stick (with a precision of 0.5 cm), calliper (with a precision of 0.5 cm) and a measuring tape (with a precision of 0.1 cm). By processing the gathered data, breeds will be characterized from the morphological point of view and it will be gained insight into age and gender differences within them.
