Sažetak
Service life of wood building products should be understood as carbon sink and extended to its possible maximum. Surface deterioration presents one of major problems. Identification of most detrimental wavebands of UV and visible light causing the complex chemical and physical changes involved in the photodegradation process is essential for a development of efficient light protective systems. Batches of thin strips of fir wood were exposed to irradiation behind a set of filters that selectively blocked UV and visible light. Depth profiles of color, microtensile and chemical changes develop in time and are specific to observed properties. Waveband from 360 to 435 nm is causing greatest proportion of all recorded damages, but visible light of wavelengths up to 510 nm should not be neglected. This shows that filtering only narrow wavebands of light may improve efficiency of light protection of a wood product and directly extend its service life and more sustainable living environment.
