Sažetak
This presentation attempts to apply Pierce’s theory of the sign to the interpretation of European Union (EU) multilingual legislation. Since EU law is often described as an independent supranational legal system with its own autonomous conceptual system, it is said that the terms or names (signs) in the 23 official languages (soon 24) designating a concept or thing (object) vary but there is a single set of associations (interpretant) linking the two. This, however, reflects the ideal situation, whereas in reality there are often multiple interpretants, thus resulting in diverse interpretations of a particular provision. The author explores the reasons for multiple interpretants and the methods of interpretation developed by the Court of Justice of the European Union to establish a single interpretant for all language versions of a disputed provision, thus promoting the uniform interpretation and application of EU law.
