Sažetak
The article provides a short history of Croatian Indology. It begins with the first Croatian Sanskritist, who published the first Sanskrit Grammar in Europe in 1790 in Rome – Filip Vesdin, or Paulinus a Sancto Bartholomaeo. He was followed by individual contributors and an entire series of professors who began teaching Sanskrit at the University of Zagreb from 1874, continuing on to the foundation of the full-fledged study programme, of Indology by Professor Radoslav Katičić between 1959, when the Chair of Indology was formally founded, and 1962, when teaching actually began. The work of Professor Katičić and his first collaborators, Dr. Milka Jauk-Pinhak and Prof. Dr. Zdravka Matišić, as well as Hindi lecturer Dr. Sheoraj Singh Jain, conclude the historical segment. During this period, sound foundations were laid for Indological studies, including classical Indology and Hindi studies ; the basic textbook “Old Indian Literature in Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit” was written by Professor Katičić, the “Elements of Hindi Grammar” was written by Dr. Matišić, and Indological research was initiated. At present, Professor Mislav Ježić, Chair, Klara Gönc Moačanin, M.A., Krešimir Krnic, M.A., Dr. Goran Kardaš, Dr. Ivan Andrijanić, assistant Biljana Zrnić, and a guest professor from India, a position currently held by Prof. Bharat Singh, teach Indology within the Department of Indology and Far Eastern Studies. The members of the Department have developed research within the fields of the Vedas, the Sanskrit epics, classical literature (especially drama and theatre), Buddhist and Brahmanic philosophy, and Old Hindi and modern Hindi language and literature. The results of research on the composition of the gvedic hymns, on the history of the Vedic pantheon, on the text history of the classical Upaniṣads and the Bhagavadgītā, on the prehistory of the Rāmāyaṇa, on central concepts in Indian theatrology, on the social role of classical literature, and on some aspects of Indian philosophy have brought Croatian Indology to note and relevance in international scholarly circles. In some cases, these results have been highly appreciated and included in authoritative international scholarly manuals. The members of the Department are currently participating in some international projects. It is possibly the Dubrovnik International Conference on the Sanskrit Epics and Purāṇas, which takes place every three years, that has contributed most to the reputation of Croatian Indology in the world. Research is accompanied by teaching, and students are also very active in their professional interests, some of whom continue with post-graduate studies. A list of selected publications of Croatian Indologists concludes the article.
