Sažetak
Innovativeness and competitiveness are modern concepts upon which national and regional policies around the globe are based. Competitiveness depends on the ability of using up of all available knowledge and entrepreneurial creativity. Regions play a key role in mobilizing of those resources, since it is easier to understand the strengths and weaknesses of ones local industry, and thus consequently recognize the needs and competences of the region. Croatian joining to the European Union posed the need for regional division of Croatia within the NUTS regions framework. Pannonian Croatia, as one of the three Croatian NUTS regions, records numerous economical problems which are, to the great extent, the result of its non-competiveness. Regional competiveness can be encouraged intentionally and proactively. That includes new and more dynamic roles of the public sector and expands the economical management system, in particular through interacting with the private sector. The aim of this paper is to analyze the key reasons for regional non-competitiveness of Pannonian Croatia and its slow, and almost impossible catching up process with respect to the other two regions. Thus, there is a need for formulation of guidelines for the future development based on innovative approach for encouraging of its competitiveness.
