Sažetak
Fetal development is influenced by the intrauterine environment. A large number of environmental factors trigger the fetal stress. One of them is placental insufficiency (PI) that leads to fetal hypoxia and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Our results on influence of PI on neurodevelopment demonstrated that development of brain damage in infants from these pregnancies depends on the degree and duration of hypoxia. Further, the non- optimal neurological outcome without Doppler signs of hypoxia confirmed the possibility of neurological seqelae even without fetal hemodinamics compromise in IUGR. The aim of our recent research is to explore whether the combined assessment of hemodynamics and spontaneous motor activity in IUGR fetuses could contribute to the better evaluation of their well-being and attribute to better assessment of fetal neurologic status in order to more accurately estimate the time of delivery and reduce adverse effects of PI on later health. Placental dysfunction and chronic exposure of the fetus to increased concentrations of glucocorticoids have long-term profound consequences on health. These conditions damage the brain, lungs, and other organ systems, generating predisposition to development of some of the most common diseases of modern society such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity. We can conclude that stress-free intrauterine environment is crucial for normal prenatal and postnatal growth and development, as well as good health in adulthood.
