Sažetak
This work summarizes the history of settlement in the area of present-day Vinkovci during the period stretching from the Late Antiquity to the early modern times. Its focus is on the village and subsequently market-town which formed around the parish church of Saint Elias and which was therefore called Szentillye in Hungarian and Ilinci in Croatian. According to archaeological and written evidence, this settlement existed from the eleventh to the sixteenth century. It was succeeded by the settlement named Vinkovci, which originally appeared in the fifteenth century as a hamlet adjacent to Szentillye/Ilinci.
