Sažetak
The Municipality of Kostrena is an coastal community situated in northern part of the Adriatic Sea. Administratively, the Municipality of Kostrena is within the Primorsko-Goranska County, Croatia. Being surrounded by highly urbanized and mostly industrial areas, Kostrena is permanently struggling with environmental issues. Nevertheless, it has been notified some time ago that certain parts of aquatic wildlife and underwater geology are still very well preserved comparing to neighbouring marine areas. Such fact has motivated the local authorities (Municipality of Kostrena) to assess the marine life in order to initiate a protection setting procces. Thus, the Municipality has engaged the experts with the Natural History Museum in Rijeka, County Institute for Development, Spatial Planning and Environmental Protection, and Civil Engeneering Institut (Branch in Rijeka) to perform the baseline natural researches and to determine the mode of protection process. Up to date, the Innitial Study on natural characteristics of proposed marine park has been completed and publicly presented in Kostrena. It could be interesting to mention that during the public presentation of the Initial Study the entire idea of protection has been strongly supported by local people and, particularely, professional fisherman. Since the future regulation containing protection measures will surely affect various marine-oriented activites, their support is extremely important in terms of future protection regime/measures.
