Sažetak
The aim of this study was the thermal characterization of natural diatomaceous earth (Dz) and its modifications (CuDz-Sulfate, or CuDz-Chloride) to be tested as possible sorbents for removing some heavy metals from raw materials or products in the refinery processing. Characterization of modified materials was carried out by simultaneous thermal techniques, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at temperatures ranging from 35°C to 1100°C. During the thermal decomposition of Dz, the sequence of events was identified. In the low-temperature range the two peak temperatures of 51.6°C and 74.5°C with a total mass loss of 2.18% were found, which were associated with the dehydration processes of adsorbed water. In the range 100-200°C the crystal water was released at about 120°C. At still higher temperatures, from 300 to 500°C, the rapid mass loss of 2.66% observed could be associated with the loss of hydroxyl groups and the transformation from the octahedrally coordinated Al, in kaolinite, to the tetrahedrally coordinated form, in metakaolinite. In the temperature range from 500°C to 600°C the mass was further reduced by 1.46%, probably due to the combustion of organic matter that is commonly found in diatomite as a material of biological origin. Thermal stability of investigated diatomite modifications, CuDz-Sulphate or CuDz- Chloride, was reduced by increasing the amount of Cu-salt adsorbed on the diatomite surface, as evidenced by the shift of their endothermic and exothermic peaks towards the lower temperatures.
