Sažetak
The article examines the ambivalent imagology of the "Turk" in the area of south eastern Europe. The approach is multidisciplinary using tools of philology, culturology, communication sciences etc. The thesis is that the negative connotations of the word "Turk" change with time and place and diffuse the epithet. In most cases "Turk" now means a close neighbor and not a distant, historical, sworn enemy. A thorough analysis of literary texts contrasts an analysis of contemporary mass media and come up with some surprising results. Namely, while Marulić's "Black Turk" was the incarnation of Satan, today's Croatian and Serbian publics admire powerful sultans, as manifested in the mass media. Turkish historic soap operas are highly popular, not just in the dominantly Muslim parts of south east Europe. There is generally a negative image of the Turk - as arch enemy - in Balkan countries. Yet this image refers less to real Turks than to different ethno-linguistic and religious neighbour groups, who are seen as more "Asiatic" and less "European" than oneself. Real Turks and the Turkish tradition - especially among Muslims - are rather admired. These images are constructions of high culture, albeit with sometimes dire consequences for all and sundry in times of conflict.
