Sažetak
Lipid transport in serum is carried out via lipoproteins. Lipoproteins are protected from oxidative damage by paraoxonase 1. The goal of this research was to determine how physiological factors affect serum lipid metabolism. The research was undertaken on Lipizzan horses. They were divided according to age, sex and gravidity (for mares). Regarding age, the first group comprised of animals under 5 years (22 female, 30 male), second one were animals between 5 and 15 years (28 female, 19 male) and the third animals older than 15 (13 female). Dividing the animals by sex created two groups of male horses (37 stallions and 11 geldings) while mares (N=63) were divided according to their gravidity status (22 non pregnant, 18 mares up to 7th month of gravity and 23 mares up to 9th month of gravity). Total and HDL bound cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride concentration, paraoxonase 1 (PON 1) activity were determined in horses’ serum. The ratio between PON 1 activity and HDL-C concentration was also calculated. Significantly higher PON 1 activity was found in mares younger than 15 years, while triglyceride concentration was significantly lower in mares older than 15 years. HDL-C concentration was significantly higher in male horses older than 15 years. PON 1 activity and PON/HDL-C ratio were higher in serum of stallions and geldings than in mares’ serum. Pregnant mares had significantly higher PON 1 activity than the non-pregnant mares, especially in the first third of gravidity. Total cholesterol concentration was significantly lower in the serum of gravid mares. HDL-C concentration also lowered during gravidity, especially in the final part of the gravidity. Lipid serum concentration, as well as PON 1 activity are dependant on age and sex, and are significantly altered during gravidity.
