Sažetak
Physical activity and exercise increase oxygen uptake and ROS generation which leads to oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the training effects for traditional Alka competition upon antioxidative and muscle enzymes activity, as well as concentration of metabolic parameters in blood serum of Thoroughbred and Croatian Warmblood horses. The experiment was carried out on nine Thoroughbred and seven Croatian Warmblood horses. The training program (the same for both breeds) consisted of combined conditioning program during 120 minutes from May till July, than 60 minutes speed trainings through 2 weeks, and afterwards two weeks 3 fast gallops on a 160 m long racecourse on Alka racecourse. Blood samples were collected 30, 21 and 14 days before Alka competition, immediately after the competition and 7 days after. Serum activities of GSH-Px, SOD, PON 1, CK, LDH, AST were determined, as well as MDA, glucose, triglyceride, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), total cholesterol and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations. SOD activity in Thoroughbred horses’ serum was significantly higher 21 days before Alka compared to 7 days after the rest. Serum MDA concentration in Thoroughbreds was significantly higher 30 days before Alka than immediately after the race. Croatian Warmblood horses MDA serum concentration was highest 30 days before race and significantly higher than all the other values. NEFA concentration in Thoroughbreds serum was also significantly higher 30 days before Alka and immediately after the race compared to concentrations 7 days after the race. AST and CK serum activity in Croatian Warmblood horses were significantly higher 30 days before Alka. Triglyceride concentrations were significantly higher in Croatian Warmblood horses compared to concentrations in Thoroughbreds 21 days before competition. The results indicate oxidative stability of horse serum and breed differences during training and competition and shift in fat metabolism due to the elevated energy needs.
