Sažetak
An exploration of the ways in which the Risorgimento idea of culture informed the liberal thinking of nineteenth-century Croatian intelligentsia, i. e. Imbro Tkalac, a prominent Croatian journalist and emigree. The paper explains how the idea of culture interacted with Tkalac’s views of the Italian Risorgimento and how it prompted him to explore the various facets of cultural policy during the Risorgimento and in its aftermath. Insights offered by a close reading of his book Italienische Plaudereien go a long way in explaining the circumstances of his life in Italy and how his appetite for art, history, and culture affected his liberal worldview.
