Sažetak
This final thesis is set to explain the development of pupils' speaking skills in English language teaching. Its main focus is on describing the teaching approaches and methods in this field of foreign language learning. The paper deals with the process of learning the spoken language and puts emphasis on language itself as well as its rules and structures. Understanding meaning is a crucial point of learning a foreign language and being able to speak it fluently and without any obstacles. Another important part of learning a spoken language is learning the discourse skills, and the way for that is through participation and interaction in order to build up knowledge, as well as social and communicative skills. All of the above is explained and thoroughly described through teaching methods and examples from real life and books which contributed to writing this thesis. The paper puts particular emphasis focus on learners, as the ones who are important and who will be using the language they are learning. Through examples and real life situations, the paper attempts the difference between speaking skills and other language skills. Speaking is the active use of language to express meaning, so that others can understand and make sense of it. This is why understanding meaning is the most important factor of developing a skillful/proficient language speaker. If the meaning is lost through the process of learning, pupils will not be able to develop their speaking skills and will not be qualified for a proper communication and interaction with the others. The key to a good speaker is the teacher and this paper is therefore teacher-oriented as well. It attempts to show that the teacher is a guide to his pupils and the leader towards their goal, which is in our case fluent speaking and being able to speak freely and openly. This thesis provides real life examples, as well as advice in developing young learners' discourse and communicative skills. It is of great importance that the students have the right teacher to look up to and follow to help them speak the foreign language they have chosen.
