Sažetak
As regards one’s position toward a child, its interests, needs and opinion, it is safe to say that modern preschool practices imply the fostering and protection of its autonomy and individuality. A modern educator will view a child as a competent person, capable of building its knowledge and developing new skills. Accordingly, a daycare center should represent a place where children’s rights are understood, respected and exercised in accordance with the basic principles of democracy. As used in daily life, the concept of democracy aims to develop awareness in children of the right to have their own positions and beliefs, but also of the obligation to accept and respect opposing opinions and individual differences when faced with them. Another important element of learning about democracy in a daycare center is preparing children for becoming moral citizens who will actively participate in its preservation, naturally, in a manner comprehensible and appropriate to children. The paper will discuss the role of an educator, which assumes preparing children for becoming adults of broad horizons, by encouraging their inborn curiosity, discussion and development of their critical opinion. Daycare center will be presented in the same context as a place where democracy is exercised every day by involving children, in cooperation with adults, in making decisions regarding the planning and implementation of preschool practices and by constantly improving their quality.
