Sažetak
Introduction: Every year in the Split-Dalmatia County a few dozen people goes missing. One portion of the missing person reports is a result of a misunderstanding while most of the disappearances are of the missing person's choice or accident. Most of the missing persons are found by police officers or that person returns home after a certain time, but small number of missing people are never found, or are found dead. Materials and methods: All information on missing persons were taken from the Missing person database of the Split-Dalmatia Police Department, while causes of death on found bodies were collected at the Clinical Department of Forensic Pathology, University Hospital Split. Results: In the analyzed period (2000.-2004.) in Split-Dalmatia county total of 533 missing person reports were filed. 526 people were found, of which 31 person was found dead. 7 missing persons were never found. Out of 31 fatal outcomes 7 causes of death was not possible to determine due to decomposition. 19 people died of violent deaths. Conclusion: Despite the fact that the number of reported disappearances in the Split-Dalmatia County is not large, and there are even fewer of those who have not been found it is always imperative to conduct a thorough investigation as to prevent deaths of those persons. Unfortunately there is little of what we can do to prevent deaths in those who want to take their own lives.
