Sažetak
Natural antioxidants are intensely studied because of their multiple well-known beneficial effects on the human organism. In this work, flowers, leafs and stems of cut leaved germander (Teucrium botrys L.), have been investigated. The content of total polyphenols (TP), flavonoids (TF) and phenolic acids (TPA) in the samples was spectrophotometrically determined using Folin Ciocalteu reagent, AlCl3 complexation and nitrite-molybdate reagent, respectively. Antioxidant activity of the extracts has been determined by three different methods: chelating activity, radical scavenging activity and β-carotene linoleic acid assay. The acitivities of the extracts were compared to positive controls EDTA (chelating activity) and BHA (radical scavenging activity and β-carotene linoleic acid assay). In all the experiments, the flower extract contained most phenolic compounds (TP, TF and TPA), followed by leaf and stem extract. The extracts showed notable antioxidant activities in all the assays, yet significantly weaker than the positive controls. Activity in radical scavenging and β-carotene linoleic acid assay was correlated with TP (r2 = 0, 97 and r2 = 0, 99, respectively), indicating that polyphenols are most likely responsible for the observed antioxidant activity in those assays.
