Sažetak
Introduction: The enzymes matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) comprise a large family of structurally related zinc metalloendopeptidases with different substrate specificities and possibilities to degrade protein constituents of the extracellular matrix. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) seem to have a crucial role in tumor cell invasion and metastasis. Colorectal cancer is the second most common malignant disease in developed countries, with 1 million new cases and 500 000 deaths worldwide every year. The etiopathogenesis of colorectal cancer is very complex and included: genetic and environmental factors, chronic inflammation, stress, nutrition, age, viruses, suffered cancer, habits, etc. Patients were selected from a stratified population sample of adult patients of both sexes that are controlled or treated at the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy in Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka. The method of enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) was used to determine enzyme expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). Blood donors were healthy controls. The phenotypic profiles of peripheral blood lymphocytes were done by flow cytometry. Results: Our results showed a large increase in the enzyme MMP-9 in the urine and the percentage of the cells of innate immunity in peripheral blood of patients with colorectal cancer with significant correlation of these values. Patients with colorectal cancer have statistically significant augmentation of level of MMP-9 in urine and increased the cells of innate immunity (NKT and regulatory T cells) in comparison with healthy volunteers New possibilities for better monitoring the disease are very important. We verified the activity of MMPs in the urine of patients with diagnosed colorectal cancer in different stages of disease.
