Sažetak
Malnutrition is best described by its pathophysiology, including under and over-nutrition. However, the widely studied hospital malnutrition mostly includes under-nutrition. There are a large number of studies on the prevalence of malnutrition in hospitalized children in the last 30 years. The new studies performed in last 5 years showed no significant changes in overall prevalence of malnutrition in hospitalized children in comparison to those published 10 to 20 years before. On average, the prevalence of malnutrition in the studies published between 2009 and 2013 was 13% and in the studies from 1979 to 2008 it was 15%. The prevalence varies among developed countries, ranging from 2.5% in Australia to 19% in the Netherlands, and developing countries reported a prevalence higher than 25%. The prevalence of malnutrition in critically ill patients is higher than that recorded in other pediatric wards. Recently published studies confirmed the still high prevalence of malnutrition in critically ill children (13%-55%), similarly to the estimates published 30 years ago (15%-60%). This review aimed at presenting a new set of data on the prevalence of hospital malnutrition in children and raise awareness of its importance.
