Sažetak
Considering that Croatia has recently joined the European Union, great efforts have been directed at the harmonization of environmental legislation, in particular reporting on air quality according to EU directives at the international, national, and local levels. This paper describes the most significant activities on establishing an integrated information framework for real-time urban air quality monitoring and assessment, which is the basis for further defining the functionality and architecture of specialized information systems. Focus is given to the application of stream databases for the automatic validation of continuous measurements from automatic monitoring stations and real-time air quality monitoring using air quality indexes and dynamic maps, with accompanying examples for the City of Zagreb. Three types of continuous queries over data streams were created and tested showing high stability and reliability. The first type of complex continuous query performs the validation of concentration values of the parameters written in data streams with respect to a given set of criteria. The second type of query calculates the air quality index in order to assess air quality, while the third type of query enables the uploading of an automatic hourly report to the Croatian Environment Agency.
