Sažetak
(I) Objective: The present study objective was to examine anthropometric, sociodemographic and medical factors associated with successful weight reduction in a 12-month weight loss program. (II) Methods: Recruited patients participated in a 5-day weight loss program in the outpatient clinic at the Dubrava University Hospital and were followed during one year period. At the beginning and at each follow up visit anthropometric data were measured. Medical history and sociodemographic data were collected at the initial visit. The reasons for abandoning the program were examined during the short telephone interview. All the data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, USA). (III) Results: 84 out of 124 recruited patients were eligible for evaluation at 12 months, resulting in a 32, 3 % attrition rate. Reasons for abandoning the program were: lack of motivation and/or unwillingness to continue with follow up visits (15, 3 %), health related issues (4 %), psychological problems (4%), unsatisfaction with the program (2, 4 %) or unknown reasons due to patients' unavailability (6, 5%) (Figure 1). The relation was explored between ten different variables and patients' success in weight reduction program (Table 1.) ; marital status was found the only significant variable (X2 =7.65, p=0.006). Married people were less likely to be successful when compared to other groups (single, widowed, divorced) (Figure 2). (IV) Conclusion: The most common reason for dropping out was lack of motivation, implying the need for tailoring weight reduction programs that would increase patients' long term motivation (i.e. involving psychotherapist in the team). Finding that married people tended to be less successful in weight reduction program suggests that more attention should be given to this subgroup of people and possibly to involve other family members in education on diet and lifestyle changes.
