Sažetak
Management practices related to culture establishment in Croatia went through different phases throughout the history. In the first place, pronounced silvicultural practices under natural principles have put culture establishment in rather unpopular place at the beginning of the 20th century with slight increase during 1960-s. After that period its share is again decreasing up to the present day. The overview of forest culture area, distribution per species, age classes and geographical position with trend of culture establishment in the last two decades clearly show the rather low amount of afforestation effort in Croatia at presence. This is even more pronounced if increase of available afforestation areas is taken into account and the amount of forests lost due to forest fires every year. In addition, functions which planted forests provide in those areas are significant and could not be replaced especially in relation with areas which are left to natural succession processes. Nevertheless, if the term „planted forests“ is taken into account, than additional amount of natural stands in Croatia could be regarded as planted forests in recent past, since natural stands which after significant effort could not be naturally regenerated (mainly Pedunculate oak stands) have to be artificially replanted. Data provided through Supervision of overall nursery production in Croatia (per tree species) could be related to real needs on the field. Therefore, further insight shows the trend of afforestation efforts in Croatia. The significance of planted forests is still growing due to change in environmental conditions (problems during the natural regeneration) with the increase of abandoned agricultural land and forest areas lost in fires.
