Sažetak
Oxidative stress is the prevalent cause of fertility disorders in mammals, but semen have antioxidative systems to neutralize excessive production of reactive oxygen species effects. The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant protection in boars' spermatozoa and seminal plasma separately, as well as to consider the impact of the breed. Semen samples of 16 boars (Swedish Landrace, Pietrain, PIC-hybrid) aged between 1.5 and 3 years were obtained once in autumn. Seminal plasma was separated from spermatozoa by centrifugation of semen, and the values of total antioxidant status (TAS), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the seminal plasma and spermatozoa of boars of different breeds were determined spectrophotometrically. The values of TAS, SOD and GSH-Px in seminal plasma were the highest in PIC-hybrids, lower in Swedish Landrace, and the lowest in Pietrain. Statistically significant difference was observed in the TAS value between PIC-hybrids and Pietrain (P<0.05). The values of SOD and GSH-Px in the spermatozoa were significantly lower in PIC-hybrids versus Swedish Landrace (P<0.001) and Pietrain (P<0.05), and the value of TAS was significantly lower in PIC-hybrids versus Swedish Landrace (P<0.01). From the obtained results, it can be concluded there are significant differences in the antioxidative protection of seminal plasma and spermatozoa in the above mentioned boar breeds and PIC-hybrids.
