Sažetak
Oesophageal and gastric foreign bodies are common in dogs. Endoscopy is a procedure that allows minimal invasive diagnostic and therapeutic examination of the GI tract. Therefore, endoscopic removal of foreign bodies is a desirable treatment option. Like any other procedure, it is not without risk. Some known complications include haemorrhage, oesophageal and/or gastric rupture which result in pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax, pyothorax, peritonitis etc… Diagnosing the presence of an oesophageal and gastric foreign bodies based on anamnesis, clinical symptoms and thoracic/abdominal radiographs is usually straight forward. Deciding between endoscopic removals versus surgical management may be more challenging. In the 5 month period (from January to May 2013) 3 dogs with oesophageal and 5 dogs with gastric foreign body were admitted at the Clinic for Internal Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb, Croatia. Endoscopic removal of foreign bodies was performed on all the dogs. During the procedure video endoscopy system was used (Olympus CLV- U20, GIF-XQ240, insertion tube: 9.0mm, channel: 2.8mm, working length: 1030mm). Depending on the type, size and location of foreign body grasping forceps or basket were used for the retrieval of foreign body. All oesophageal foreign bodies and four gastric foreign bodies were successfully removed by endoscope. The remaining dog with gastric foreign body had to be forwarded to surgery after unsuccessful endoscopy retrieval attempt. Despite possible complications endoscopic removal of oesophageal and gastric foreign bodies is still the preferred method of treating these conditions because it is a less invasive and safer method than surgical treatement.
