Sažetak
Determining the impact of engineered nanoparticles (ENP) on living organisms is a rapidly growing area of research due to increasing evidence of their potentially significant harmful effects. However, because of the complexity of higher organisms, difficulties in understanding the fate and mode of action of ENP has not kept pace with the increasing industrial use of, and exposure to ENP. In the focus of interest lays the genotoxic potential of ENPs [1, 2] and thir effects on embryonal development of marine species [3, 4, 5, 6]. As marine invertebrates such as mussels and sea urchins have been used for many years as environmental sentinels or as models for the functioning of the human immune system, respectively, they provide a unique opportunity as key organisms for tracking the uptake and effects of ENP and allowing parallels be drawn for the interaction of ENP with humans. Thus, we report herein the effects of TiO2 and Ag ENP on the cell cycle and DNA integrity in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis hemocytes and embryonal development of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. The research carried out provide the deeper knowledge and contribute understanding of possible mechanism of action of selected ENPs on selected marine organisms, and their developmental stages in particular. Results indicate that embryonal development and skeletogenesis in sea urchins are highly sensitive to silver nanoparticle concentrations in the ppb range, causing significant growth retardation, deformation and embryo death. The development phase of the urchin embryos was found to have a strong impact on survival rate depending on when the embryos made first contact with ENP. Further, the cell cycle modulation and reduced DNA integrity of mussel hemolimph upon the exposition to TiO2 and Ag ENPs are recorded.
