Sažetak
The aim of the study was to explore the relations between obesity and fitness indicators and energy and time spent in physical activity (PA) of different intensities in adults. The sample consisted of 31 men and 20 women aged 40±3.7 years. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), sum of four skinfolds (S4SK) and the fat percentage (% BF) (Jackson and Pollock, 1985) were calculated. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2maxrel), aerobic threshold (Vo2AT) and anaerobic threshold (VO2AnT) were determined during direct tredmill spiroergometry (K4 Cosmed equipment). Energy expenditure (EE) and the time spent sedentary and in PA measured by combined system SenseWear Armband™ (Body Media, Pittsburgh, PA) during seven consecutive days. Pearson’s partial correlations between the particular indicators and EE and the time spent in PA controlled for gender were calculated. The results revealed significant negative correlations between the relative EE (total and EE during activity) and obesity indicators and positive correlations between the EE indicators and aerobic fitness indicators. BMI and WC were negatively correlated only with the moderate intensity PA (3-6 MET). While S4SK and %BF showed moderate to high negative correlations with the time spent in moderate and vigorous PA (>6MET). The time spent in sedentary activities was negatively correlated with VO2maxrel and VO2AT. The time spent in low intensity activities didn’t show significant correlations with fitness indicators. Moderate activity was partially correlated with VO2maxrel (r=0.36) and VO2AT (r=0.43). Only time spent in vigorous activity was significantly correlated with VO2AnT.
