Sažetak
Any map projection is a mapping from a sphere or an ellipsoid. It follows that their images have to be more or less symmetrical because these surfaces are nicely symmetrical. That symmetry can be noticed on large number of map projections, e.g. on azimuthal and cylindrical projections. Many other map projections have at least one axis of symmetry. Those are conic, pseudocylindrical, pseudoconic or polyconic projections. On the other hand, the content represented on maps is usually without symmetry, e.g. relief, sea and rivers, administrative boundaries etc. That is the reason that almost any map is characterised by mathematical symmetry and natural asymmetry. Moreover, it can be shown that there exist map projections with deliberately violated mathematical symmetry in order to obtain better distribution of distortion of mapped area.
